Who doesn't love a cup of freshly ground roasted coffee? It's a great pick-me-up in the morning and gives you the energy you need to get going. The best machines that both grind and brew coffee are expensive. However, there are individual grinders on the market that allow you to grind the amount you need and even extra to store for future use. That way every cup you have can be a fresh one.
The best way to preserve the richness and flavor of coffee beans is to inhibit its interaction with moisture, heat, air and sunlight.
Coffee Grinders
Some manufacturers use the vacuum pack or freeze-dry process to do this. These coffees are commonly found in the supermarket. Both of these procedures involve slowing down the chemical processes that occur when coffee beans are roasted.
Do you know what happens during the roasting process? When beans are roasted the natural oils inside of each bean rises to the surface. For a good cup of coffee, those oils need to remain inside the bean. When the coffee bean's oils are exposed to the atmosphere they can interact with elements and result in rancid coffee.
Ever wonder why freshly roasted and ground beans smell so good? When they are roasted and ground, the beans release strong gases that are pleasurable to smell. Coffee roasters know this and try to preserve the natural taste and aroma of coffee by sealing in the gases so they are released.
Vacuum packed coffee is a commonly used process but it doesn't make for the best cup of coffee because it sucks out so much of the coffee bean's gases during packing.
If you don't have your own coffee grinder, you can often use coffee grinders provided in stores. You can purchase the amount you need for the week and then grind it while you're there. It will stay fresh if you store it in a tightly sealed container, preferably one made that is ceramic. Ceramic containers are desirable because they block out light which can interact with the coffee beans.
Ceramic containers aren't hard to find. They come in a variety of sizes in stores in your community. Look for those with wire locks and rubber seals for the tightest fit.
